MADRID (Xinhua) -- Two Spanish soldiers were killed and another seriously injured on Sunday in a suicide attack in Afghanistan, local media reported.

The attack occurred when a suicide attacker rammed a bomb-filled minivan into a NATO military convoy in the Afghan province of Herat, one of the most dangerous regions in the country, the National Radio of Spain reported.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on their website, saying they had assumed the convoy was an American one.
Defense Minister Carmen Chacon has confirmed the death of two Spanish soldiers who were in charge of training Afghan soldiers. The last attack in which there were Spanish victims occurred in September 2007.
Spain keeps a contingent of 778 soldiers in Afghanistan under the 53,000-strong NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). A total of 87 Spanish soldiers have died in Afghanistan SOFAR.
